KEY VISUALS FOR THE RESEARCH
OF THE "PAOLI LAB"

Representing the three research topics

About
These visualizations illustrate the hidden dynamics of microbial immunity across diverse environments, from the human gut to the deep ocean. Microbes, shown here as cellular structures, are connected through arcs of binary code and molecular symbols, representing the constant exchange of genetic information and the defense strategies they deploy against viral infections.
The images emphasize how microbial communities are under continuous evolutionary pressure from viruses and genetic parasites, and how this pressure shapes the complexity of microbial immune systems. By combining artistic visualization with scientific detail, the scenes highlight the ecological scale of these interactions — capturing microbial defense not as isolated events, but as processes that sustain ecosystems, influence human health, and offer potential for biotechnological applications.

About
These visualizations were developed to show the three main areas of research of the group.
Research Question
How can concepts about evolutionary medicine, such as antibiotic resistance and virulence, be conveyed in a more engaging and understandable way?
Medium & Form Choice
An interactive website enables learners to control the pace at which they absorb information, while incorporating gamified interactions to encourage engagement with the content.
Design Principles
Through progressive disclosure and strong metaphors, the content is made more accessible to learners, providing a framework for understanding future content related to the topic.
